Has it been generally happening around suspend? Ah, the source says “What happened here was likely that a laptop, which ran at a reduced clock frequency at boot, kicked into high gear. If you look it up, you will see that everyone always starts with the probably-reasonable guess of ntp, which I am not using. Apparently this used to be a common error message long ago. In the 12.1 days, I’m occasionally seeing error messages about groups of processes where “ calcru: runtime went backwards”.

By contrast, I’m pretty certain that I’ve removed the bay on the E6440 with no problem. I believe I may have seen it do that before, although I don’t wish to repeat it to prove it will always happen. Hmm, I pulled the dvd bay out and reinserted it and saw that the system had locked up. Just couldn’t justify to myself buying it a new backlight. If the industry had taken the T43 as its ideal and stuck with updating that general form instead of everyone following apple… So my T43 was finally pretty much retired in early 2019, but with reluctance. The dvd drive on it was always flaky (in Linux, too), and wireless seemed to get shakier over the years. It is old enough to have a CCFL backlight, quite dim now, and so is only comfortable to use in a darkish room. And you have to use a program instead of the Fn key combinations to change display brightness.

Freebsd doesn’t seem to notice when I click the wireless kill switch, although I believe it did notice the one time when I booted with it already clicked to off. The E6440 was chosen because it was like the last mainstream laptop made to be upgradeable and repairable. I have the suspicion that drm-kmod may be at the bottom of the various aspects of this problem. Fixed in 12.2! And my main problem on the E6440 is suspend/resume.

There, a tiny kernel patch is necessary for the headphones. Secondary: Latitude E6440, whose keyboard is garbage (as all laptop keyboards are now) (although it is backlit, and that is nicer than those lights on my Thinkpads that end up shining into your eyes) and mouse buttons are even more serious garbage but whose display is pretty decent (I got the 300-nit 1920×1080 display). If they manage to make my X201 experience bad enough, I’ll go back to Linux. Eventually: The drm-kmod assholes keep talking like anything before 2012 does not exist. The X201 is a bit plasticky and has begun to fail in smallish ways and probably won’t last forever. Primary: Thinkpad X201, whose keyboard I like and whose display is far from great, and my only problem is that you have do some configuration for speakers/headphones.
